Cheek takes top spot on Chickahominy River

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Boater Craig Cheek of Newport News, Va., won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament on the Chickahominy River Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 13 pounds, 5 ounces. The victory earned Cheek $3,053 and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Lake Seminole Regional Championship in Bainbridge, Ga., Oct. 16-18, where he could ultimately win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.

“I caught my fish mostly on a Bandit and Lucky Craft crankbait and probably one or two on a Berkley Power Hawg,” Cheek said. “We were fishing up river, and then we came down to about midriver. They were in water 5 to 8 feet deep, in the grass.”

Rounding out the top five boaters are Joseph Carr of Lanexa, Va. (five bass, 13-4, $1,796); Donnie Harper of Chesterfield, Va. (five bass, 12-2, $1,201); Walter Emerson of Mechanicsville, Va. (five bass, 11-13, $838); and Brian Bowers of Franklinton, N.C. (five bass, 11-7, $658).

Harper took home the Boater Division Snickers Big Bass award, earning $460 for a 6-pound, 4-ounce bass he caught on a Senko.

Stacy Metz of Staley, N.C., earned $1,796 as the co-angler winner Saturday thanks to five bass weighing 13 pounds, 3 ounces that he caught on a Sweet Beaver and frog.

Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Brad Zeigler of Sanford, N.C. (five bass, 9-14, $898); Waylon Brown of Elm City, N.C. (five bass, 9-9, $598); Randy Clark of Staley, N.C. (four bass, 9-5, $419); and Tony Toombs of Drakes Branch, Va. (five bass, 8-12, $359).

Ben Dewit of Edenton, N.C., earned $230 as the co-angler Big Bass winner after catching a 4-pound, 4-ounce bass he caught on a Senko.

A two-day Super Tournament, the division’s fifth and final event, will be held on Kerr Lake in Henderson, N.C., Sept. 27-28.

Following the end of regular-season competition, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on year-end points standings in the division will advance to the no-entry-fee Lake Seminole Regional Championship where they will compete against top qualifiers from three other BFL divisions. At the Regional Championship boaters will fish for a new Ranger boat and Chevy truck and co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger boat. The top six boaters and top six co-anglers at the Regional Championship will also advance to the All-American presented by Chevy. With a total purse of $1 million, a potential $140,000 cash prize going to the winning boater and as much as $70,000 going to the winning co-angler, the All-American is one of the most prestigious and lucrative events in bass fishing. The winning boater and winning co-angler at the All-American also advance to the no-entry-fee $2 million Forrest Wood Cup. This event, featuring a top award of $1 million, is the sport’s biggest championship.

Boater Danny Wicker of Hillsboro, N.C., won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament on the Potomac River Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 18 pounds, 8 ounces. The victory earned Wicker $3,531 and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Albemarle Sound Regional Championship in Elizabeth City, N.C., Oct. 9-11, where he could ultimately win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.

Heath took home the Boater Division Snickers Big Bass award, earning $570 for a 5-pound, 15-ounce bass he caught on a jig in and around grass.

Larry Drewett of Sterling, Va., earned $2,078 as the co-angler winner Saturday thanks to five bass weighing 17 pounds, 1 ounce that he caught throwing a Strike King Diamond Shad near rocks.

Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Pat Riley of Lynchburg, Va. (five bass, 16-2, $1,039); James Bradfield of Raleigh, N.C. (five bass, 15-1, $691); John Chandler of Lovettsville, Va. (five bass, 14-10, $485); and Jeffrey Brill of Stephens City, Va. (four bass, 13-1, $416).

Chandler earned $285 as the co-angler Big Bass winner after catching a 4-pound, 12-ounce bass he caught on a ChatterBait.

Lineberry lands BFL win on Lake Gaston

BRACEY, Va. — Boater Greg Lineberry of Creedmoor, N.C., won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament on Lake Gaston Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 15 pounds, 6 ounces. The victory earned Lineberry $4,012 plus a $708 Ranger contingency bonus and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Lake Seminole Regional Championship in Bainbridge, Ga., Oct. 16-18, where he could ultimately win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.

Lineberry caught bedding fish with jigs and tubes in the Eaton Ferry area.

Rounding out the top five boaters are Wes Dacey of Colonial Heights, Va. (five bass, 15-5, $2,360); Flash Butts of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. (five bass, 14-15, $1,574); J.T. Palmore of Gasburg, Va. (five bass, 14-9, $1,101); and Ricky Farr of Chesterfield, Va. (five bass, 14-3, $944).

Mace makes grade on Smith Mountain Lake

Mace caught his limit on a green-pumpkin shaky head, focusing on shallow areas in the lower lake.

Rounding out the top five boaters are Mike Hoskings of Alexandria, Va. (five bass, 16-15, $2,419); Thomas Wooten of Huddleston, Va. (five bass, 15-5, $1,614); Scott Smith of Apex, N.C. (five bass, 15-2, $1,129); and Mark Clingenpeel of Boones Mill, Va. (five bass, 14-8, $968).
