Here are photos taken at our last youth event out of Northwest River Park in Chesapeake, Virginia on August 2, 2008. We limit registration to 50 kids. We had 47 kids in attendance. The weather was great, as the humidity was down.
The event started at 9am with the kids being provided with rods, reels, and live worms. The adult volunteers position themselves around the shore of the river and assist the kids with baiting their hooks, casting and landing fish. We had catfish, perch and bass caught this particular morning.
At about 10am, the Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries put on demonstration with the “shock” boat and answered many questions that the kids had. Even some of the parents got in on the questions.
They all continued to fish until about 11:30am where we presented each and every child with a goodie bag and a Gold medal for their participation in the day’s events. The kids ranged in ages 3 to about 11 and about a fourth of them were returning from the last event held on June 8th there.
This event is held twice a year: the first Sunday in June and the first Saturday in August. It is co-hosted by the Chesapeake Parks & Recreation Department and available to all who sign up within the limit. We are considering offering a larger limit of kids for next year’s events.
