Western stud Shaun Bailey brings us the lowdown into day 2 of the US Open. He started by mentioning that the wind was a brutal factor in today’s bite. Lots of guys were catching them on worms in practice, and guys who made the switch to reaction baits in the wind saw the results needed to stay on the top today.
Dock talk has third place Rick Clunn said to be cranking up his bites, as are a lot of the guys in the top 10. The deal with the crank bite is that you have to milk an area all day to get the big bites.
Shaun reported catching his fish primarily on a Roboworm today in about 20 feet to get a limit, and culled into some bigger fish with an EverGreen buzzbait as well as an EverGreen walking bait.
Notable is that the heat has taken down several guys throughout the event, including top stick Justin Kerr, who is in the hospital after suffering a heat stroke. Shaun mentioned his way to stay hydrated was to prepare well and hydrate-up the night before, and he even goes so far as to keep a bucket of water in the floor of the boat and dump it on his head throughout the day to keep himsef saturated all day. Pretty crazy stuff.

2009 Open Champ Gary Dobyns later noted that with the top 10 so tightly knit, it’s still anyone’s game. He expects reaction bites to be the key to success.
